Luckily, commodity trading is known as one of the least stressful industries so there's nothing to worry about on that front...if only that were true.
With the constant stream of headlines about tariffs, geopolitical risks, interest rates, and inflation, it's easy to feel like you're always bracing for the next crisis.
Stress and burnout are, unfortunately, common companions in this business. Sometimes itโs the high-stakes environment of the trading desk. Other times itโs the pressure of performance, P&L, or the sense of being disconnected from the people and things that matter most.
I'm not naive enough to say stress shouldn't be part of the job. The bar is high, as it should be. Commodities are essential to the functioning of the world economy, so trading them will always be both rewarding and demanding.
But Iโve seen brilliant, capable people quietly buckle under the weight of it all, without an outlet, without support.
So if any of this resonates with you, please ask for help. If you see a colleague struggling and youโve got the capacity, maybe check in, offer to share the load, or just listen.
Sometimes, that small gesture can mean more than you know.
